Occupation Description

Orthotic-Prosthetic (O&P) health professionals possess a unique combination of skills and expertise in anatomy and physiology, materials science, biomechanics, technology, human-device interfaces, mechanical design, gait analysis, and interdisciplinary patient care. They use these qualities to perform a thorough evaluation, fabricate, fit, and maintain follow-up care in the provision of orthoses (braces), and prostheses (artificial limbs) - including education to address patient-specific needs along the process. They integrate scientific knowledge when making decisions about the most appropriate technologies throughout this continuum of care. O&P professionals provide safe, comprehensive patient care that promotes health equity, and community engagement, and aligns with the goals of collaborating healthcare providers.

Job Description

Orthotic-Prosthetic Technicians design, fabricate, maintain, and repair medical devices such as foot orthoses (shoe inserts), back, hip, knee, ankle, and arm orthoses (braces), and prostheses (artificial limbs), to provide the best possible fit, operation, function, and appearance. The Technician excels in mechanical problem-solving, is an expert in the techniques and materials used in fabrication, and is skilled in the use of tools and machinery.

Employment Characteristics

Work Settings. Orthotic-prosthetic technicians can be employed in any of the following settings: private practices, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, universities, central fabrication laboratories, or manufacturers of O&P components. Team Collaboration. They collaborate closely with orthotist-prosthetists, O&P assistants, and sometimes engineers (e.g., bioengineers). Device Evaluation. They assess and adjust the operational quality, safety, and durability of the device to conform to prescription details. In addition, they evaluate components’ physical/mechanical/material properties and behavior in relation to the treatment plan and the manufacturer's conditions of use and/or specifications. Fabrication, repair, and maintenance. They use appropriate equipment, materials, components, and techniques when fabricating, repairing, and maintaining patient-specific orthoses and prostheses focusing on flexural rigidity and overall durability. Documentation. They maintain records of fabrication and device specifications in accordance with certification standards.

Education Programs

Length. Orthotic and/or prosthetic technicians may spend between 6 months to 2 years to earn a minimum of a certificate at the completion of the program. Prerequisites. There are no prerequisites to enter the technician program. Curriculum. The professional curriculum includes formal instruction in safety and compliance, musculoskeletal anatomy, fundamentals of O&P fabrication, repair and maintenance, shop management, and extensive hands-on experience in a workshop setting, applying the knowledge learned in the classroom.
